Steps to go from struggle to success

When I look back now at the recent events in my life I can see that I was already on the road to burnout before it struck me down.

There was the long, gruelling ten months of observing my mother’s deterioration after a sudden, unexpected medical emergency before she died. It was a struggle to maintain my mental stability being on the other side of the world. I couldn’t be there to support and comfort her as she battled her health issues because the pandemic was unfurling. I was emotionally drained before the end of the year and then she passed away.

To top it all, when my colleague handed in her notice and I was left alone to hold the fort at work, I was a train wreck waiting to happen.

Then I started to unravel. The main things I remember were:

  • Crippling anxiety.

  • I was snappy and irrational.

  • There was no enjoyment in my life.

It is with great relief that I can now say that although I hit rock bottom, it was what I needed to give me the breathing space to reassess my priorities and get my life back on track, working for me instead of against me.

I’ve been able to build strong foundations in my emotional resilience and can articulate clear boundaries that I have the courage to stick to.

It’s not been easy - taking baby steps with a bit of falling down, but always managing to get up and move in a forward direction. The slow and steady approach has worked wonders. I feel confident in being able to do my job again. But more importantly I get a tingle of satisfaction as I click “sign off” and “shut down” at the end of the day and head out for my daily walk. Learning to put my mental health first has been a game changer in bringing a spring back into my step.

I love my work with Jackie.  Jackie has shown me that change starts within me and that it is possible if you take incremental steps.  Self-reflection doesn’t have to be scary, overwhelming or uncomfortable, but the results I have achieved were only possible with real honesty – with myself!  Jackie has taught me how to form new habits and keep myself accountable.  I’m less stressed, need less sleep and feel more energised.
