Take Time Out, Reset then Return to Life Refreshed

If I can do this, you can too!

It’s taken me a while, but I finally realise that I don’t need to control every aspect of my life and I don’t need to prove my worth to anyone – especially at work. The last eighteen months have been a roller coaster, all starting from when I called in sick at work with burnout in June 2021.

I look back now and see that it gave me permission to take time out to reflect, reset and return to life refreshed with a new mindset that supports me rather than hinders my happiness.

This didn’t happen overnight and initially I experienced a lot of negative emotions – why am I feeling this way, why can’t I cope? I felt ashamed and fearful of what my work colleagues would think of me leaving them in the lurch like that.

However, I now acknowledge that I’d been setting myself up for a fall. I’d experienced two big losses in December 2020, the death of my mother plus a close colleague leaving my workplace. I took everything on that was given to me thinking I had to cope. I was mistaken. I could have asked for support sooner; I could have delegated. But I like to feel valued and indispensable, so I didn’t and in the end I was forced to take time out. My mind and body just couldn’t cope.

Thankfully, I’ve allowed a long healing process for my recovery and taken it one small step at a time. I realise that I was my own worst enemy. The key thing for me was to give myself permission not to rush back to work and when I did, on my terms. This involved a leap of faith and a lot of courage as I put in a Workcover claim against my employer for expecting me to do the work of two people. It was a huge relief when my employer didn’t contest it. I felt so much lighter and used the process to take baby steps with my recovery so I could maintain it.

I knew that if I invested in gently taking care of my mental health – listening to my body and being aware of my emotions, that I would improve steadily and sustainably. With the support of various health care professionals, I now reap the results. I’m able to function better at work. I’m more self aware and can delegate or ask for support. I no longer feel inferior or that I’m losing control of aspects that may impact my reputation. I appreciate the value I bring especially mentoring the new team members.

An exciting by product of my new relaxed approach to life is I decided to join a choir! It’s the best move I could have made. It’s such fun and feeds my soul. I’ve even attended my first Christmas “gigs” with other members of the group. Whereas in the past I would have hidden in the back row, I’ve been front and centre on the stage!! I thought “what the hell?” and gave it my best shot.

As part of my personal healing journey, I devised my three step Targeted Transformation Program.
