Be More Accepting of Your Dysfunctional Family this Christmas
Do you dread Christmas? The falseness of it? There’s so much pressure to have to meet up with everyone and their dog simply because of the time of year.
It’s ridiculous really when you think about it.
The main down side is the obligation to be nice to siblings who you don’t really like or get on with. But you do it too keep the peace. Then your Mother feels she has a perfect, functioning family unit and she’s done a good job. The thought that you would rather be somewhere else wouldn’t cross her mind!
The opportunity here is to simply let go of any expectations of how people should be, and be more accepting of your dysfunctional family just as they are this Christmas. You cannot change them. No matter how much you wish they’d see your point of view, they simply may not be able to.
So, stop beating yourself up and getting yourself upset. Have appreciation for what relationship you may have and release any expectation of achieving anything different.
As an adult you choose how you live your life and are only responsible for what you do, not them. When you allow this mindset it takes the pressure off and you can relax.
I remember once, I was discussing my family interrelationships with a friend and we were comparing the similarities to hers. However, at the end she kindly said to me that although her family was dysfunctional mine was worse! I wasn’t sure if I felt offended or relieved!
The main thing I did learn was that regardless of your family situation it’s unrealistic to expect to get on with everyone.
Being true to yourself is more important. Then you can really enjoy yourself.
Give it a go. You have nothing to lose.
Wishing you a stress free Christmas.
